The first-generation Rokurokudo master opened his own pottery kiln in Entoku-in Temple (a sub-temple of Kodai-ji Temple) in the Higashiyama district. He gave his pottery works the name Kodaiji-yaki. Later, the kiln was moved to Sannenzaka Street, just by the famous Kiyomizu Temple, and Rokurokudo created fine Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki pottery works as a manufacturer throughout the Meiji, Taisho and Showa periods.

As time passed and reached the present Heisei period (after 1989), Rokurokudo came to focus more on exhibiting art works of excellent craftsmanship by artists based in Kyoto (mainly ceramic arts). In September 2016, we moved our store to a new location. At this watershed in Rokurokudo’s history, we would like to feature not only traditional craftspeople but also a variety of contemporary art forms. We hope you will appreciate sophisticated Japanese beauty with us.

Hanging scroll bestowed by the Imperial Noble Kuga, who the first-generation Rokurokudo master served as his appointed potter.
At the master’s 88th celebratory birthday, the Imperial Noble Kuga presented a hanging scroll which depicted a set of utensils for the Sencha Japanese tea ceremonies. He also composed a waka (Japanese poem) in tribute to our first-generation’s potter name, “Rokuroku (lit. 66 = double six)” and inscribed it on the scroll.

“Six times six makes thirty-six,
The same number of mountains
Surrounding the Higashiyama area,
Where Kodaiji-yaki is created.”

The bowls long belonged to another institution but were returned to Rokurokudo just before the opening of the new store as if by fate.
